![]() ![]() ![]() The submarine cable networks of Reliance and telecom operator Bharti Airtel are expected to address the growing digital economy in India and 5G expansion, which has taken off this year. Over 90% of internet communication is routed through submarine cables. Optic fibre-based undersea cables form the bedrock of modern-day communication. The IEX proposal was considered as per the CRZ Notification, 2019 which is applicable in the Mumbai Suburban district and was cleared with conditions and the observation that ‘the project is important for network connectivity of India with other parts of the Europe’. The panel finally recommended the proposal for CRZ clearance with conditions - to ensure that cable laying and associated facilities do not hinder the fishing activity in the area, that all construction shall be strictly in accordance with the provisions of the CRZ Notification, 2011 and no groundwater shall be extracted. The Committee opined that as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry for consideration of such projects in the interim period the instant project can be considered,” according to the minutes of the panel meeting. “The Committee observed that the project is important for network connectivity of India with other parts of Asia. Hence, the proposal was submitted based on the CRZ Notification, 2011. Reliance had moved the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) in June 2021 for the IAX proposal but at that time CZMP 2019 maps were not published. ![]()
